The owners of this listed detached home wanted to keep its traditional look during a much-needed roof replacement. Because the property is in a conservation area, the contractor, John Wood Roofing Ltd., a specialist in slate and tile roofing, submitted the new roof design for planning permission.

Many neighbouring homes had Spanish slate roofs, but the client wanted to replace the original Scottish slate roof with either Scottish slate or a high-quality replica. As it is now difficult to source enough Scottish slate, the contractor chose Burlington Slate, a premium stone from a Lake District quarry that closely matches Scottish slate. The slate is available only through SIG Roofing in Scotland and was supplied by its local branch in Broxburn.
